PEER TUTORING

TAFE ACCREDITED PEER TUTORING

Making a difference: The TAFE accredited Peer Tutor Program is a highly successful joint venture between Loftus TAFE and Georges River College Hurstville Boys’ Campus in which volunteer year 10 students tutor year 7 and year 8 students in literacy.

The Program Requirements:
Year 10 students complete two TAFE modules: one practical and one theoretical.

1.  The practical module requires the students to tutor year 7 and 8 tutees in their classroom texts in all subjects during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). This allows tutees exposure to the literacy involved in their class work before they encounter it in the classroom.

2. The theory module involves several days of training at Loftus TAFE, followed by daily monitoring by participating teachers and regular observation sessions by the facilitating TAFE supervisor.

·         Confidence in the material presented in class due to their familiarity with the text
·         Significant improvements in their reading and overall literacy
·         Increased self esteem
·         Development of a positive attitude towards school work
