Clean Up Australia Day

On the 27th of February 2009,  Mrs Battaglia and the Environmental Roll Call class (and a couple of “green” focused students) went on an excursion to Gannons Park to be a part of “Clean Up Australia” Day. When we got to the park, we were handed gloves and garbage bags, then we were ready to go and start our day of cleaning up our local community.

We found a lot of different things, such as plastic and glass bottles, drink cans, plastic bags, foil, rugs, we even found a mattress! Many large garbage bags were filled. We had a couple of rest breaks where we had our snacks and drinks. Some boys had enough energy to play cricket with a branch they found. We walked down Gannons Park towards the river, collecting rubbish on the way.

I was time to head back to school. We all carried bags of rubbish to our school and throw it in the dumpsters.  We were exhausted, dirty and hungry. After cleaning ourselves up we had pizza for lunch. During the last period of the day, we worked in groups writing up what happened that day, filled out a rubbish audit and brainstormed ideas on what the school can do for World Environment Day.
